When Policy Meets Reality: Closing the Gap Between Safety Commitments and Customer Experience

Ask for Angela Audits: Policy driven audits to ensure customer safety

For hospitality businesses, customer safety is more than a written policy. It is a commitment that must be delivered by real people, in real venues, at the moment support is needed. This is why Serve Legal are so proud of the work they do with Ask for Angela to test how the initiative operates in practice.

The Ask for Angela initiative gives someone who feels unsafe or vulnerable a simple, discreet way to request support. By asking a member of staff for “Angela”, they can indicate that they need help without having to explain the situation publicly. Trained staff should respond calmly, discreetly and appropriately, taking the customer’s lead on the support they need.

It is a simple interaction, but it relies on staff being prepared.

From a visible promise to an effective response

Displaying Ask for Angela materials tells customers that help is available. It can give someone greater confidence to enter or remain in a venue, particularly if they are concerned about their safety.

The official Ask for Angela website highlights the wider value of visible safety measures. It cites YouGov research finding that 49% of people, including 63% of women, would be more likely to visit a venue with measures in place to improve women’s safety. However, posters and policies are only the beginning. The real measure of an initiative is whether a member of staff recognises the request and knows what to do next. What Serve Legal’s audits show

Serve Legal auditors complete controlled interactions that assess how staff respond when the Ask for Angela phrase is used.

The audits help establish whether:

  • The member of staff recognises the phrase
  • The request is handled sensitively and discreetly
  • The correct person or manager becomes involved
  • Support is offered promptly
  • Staff appear prepared to follow the venue’s procedure
  • The customer is treated calmly and respectfully

The purpose is not to catch individual employees out, but to provide businesses with an objective account of the customer experience and identify where further support may be required.

What the data tells us

Serve Legal’s 2025 research into Ask for Angela included more than 450 participants and demonstrated the level of public trust placed in the initiative:

  • 93% recognised Ask for Angela
  • 85% believed it made venues safer for customers and staff
  • 73% felt personally safer knowing the initiative was available

However, among the hospitality workers surveyed, 76% said they had not received Ask for Angela training. Among those who had received some form of training, only 27% felt very confident managing an Ask for Angela situation.

Furthermore, our current audit data shows an encouraging pass rate of 73%. Achieving this level of compliance across busy, real-world hospitality environments demonstrates the commitment many participating venues and their teams have made to implementing Ask for Angela effectively. We are impressed by this positive starting point and by the investment being made to strengthen staff awareness and preparedness. However, when it comes to customer safety, the ambition must be to move as close to 100% as possible. The remaining 27% highlights why continued auditing, practical training and ongoing support are so important in helping every venue respond confidently and appropriately when someone asks for Angela.

The audits that Serve Legal undertake allows businesses to understand the customers' real experience and identify gaps in staff knowledge. This can then aid hospitality venues in strengthening staff training and improving escalation procedures. Repeated auditing can then help determine whether those changes are translating into a more consistent customer experience.

Creating accountability across the sector

Ask for Angela’s work increasingly emphasises the importance of both commitment and consistent delivery.

In March 2026, the organisation launched its Official Pledge at Wembley Stadium. The Pledge gives businesses a formal way to commit to operating the initiative correctly and consistently. Organisations that sign the pledge are added to the Ask for Angela official map, which helps customers and communities identify venues committed to safer environments. This commitment is very important, and so is the ability to demonstrate that it is being fulfilled. Milestones | Driving Ask for Angela Forward — Ask for Angela

Testing this policy through auditing with Serve Legal gives hospitality operators evidence of what is happening across their venues, teams and shifts. It moves the conversation beyond whether a policy exists and towards whether customers can rely on it.

When someone asks for Angela, the response matters

Ask for Angela is built around a simple promise: when someone discreetly asks for help, staff will be ready to support them. Serve Legal helps organisations test whether that promise is being delivered.

By combining clear policies and practical training with independent evidence, hospitality businesses can better understand where their procedures are working, where improvements are needed and how prepared their teams are to respond.

Serve Legal are proud to work with Ask for Angela, helping businesses close the gap between policy and reality and turn their commitment to customer safety into consistent, measurable action.
