In just eight weeks, the first fireworks of the season will hit retail shelves. Bonfire Night, Halloween, Christmas, New Year — they’ll all arrive before we know it.
Unlike alcohol, cigarettes, or vapes which are sold year-round with consistent training and enforcement, fireworks are a highly seasonal product. That seasonality makes them uniquely challenging for retailers when it comes to compliance and proving due diligence.
Fireworks (including sparklers) can only be sold by registered retailers during these specific windows:
Outside these dates, only specially licensed shops may sell fireworks. Breaches carry significant consequences: fines without an upper limit, prison sentences of up to six months, and on-the-spot penalties of £90.
A recent case in Bradford highlights the stakes. During last year’s Bonfire season, a 16-year-old test purchaser bought a “Vortex battery of shots” from Bang Fireworks — a pop-up shop. The owner pleaded guilty to selling to a minor. In his own words, his business collapsed as a result. Sentencing for the offence is still pending.
Age verification for alcohol, cigarette, and vape sales are built into daily retail operations. Staff encounter these sales tens of times a day, and training becomes second nature.
Fireworks, however, are different. They appear in-store once or twice a year — and staff may only have a handful of real-world interactions with customers purchasing them. Without robust preparation, even well-meaning teams can slip up. That’s why proactive training and clear, enforced policies are essential.
With the fireworks season approaching, now is the time to ensure you are ready.
Serve Legal has worked with retailers nationwide to test age-restricted sales for fireworks, alcohol, cigarettes, and vapes. Our independent compliance testing gives retailers confidence that their policies are not only in place — but are working in practice.
Fireworks bring excitement and celebration — but they also bring risk. A single illegal sale can lead to prosecution, devastating fines, and long-term reputational damage. Just as with alcohol and tobacco, the safest path is one of zero tolerance, rigorous checks, and confident staff.
Firework season is nearly here. Are your plans ready and are they rigid enough to keep your business safe?
